Berks Teens Matter

“Art for teens”

by Nadine J. Smet-Weiss, Community Liaison; translated by Johnathan Rodriguez-Báez, HRC and Youth Ambassador Coordinator

“Art,” writes author Rayne Lacko, “is born of the very human need to express who you are. Art gives you the words you may find impossible to say. . . Art allows you to play, and play is how we all first negotiated with the big, unknown world before we could put a name to our feelings.”

This frame clarifies the value of art in life, particularly during stages of significant change – it allows us to give expression to who we are. This truth was repeatedly confirmed by Valois Joubert, Art Coordinator with Barrio Alegria, in a recent conversation about the many young artists she works with. Their art is an expression of their lived experience she told me, and sharing it with others helps them to talk about their experience.

Whether the art form is painting, poetry reading, singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument, making an amazing meal or something else entirely art is a way of connecting our inner world with the outer world. While this connection is important in every stage of life, it takes on increased importance during the teen years. In these years youth are experiencing tremendous internal changes and challenging external changes as they are sometimes treated like children and at other times expected to behave like adults. Negotiating this turmoil can be eased by having access to art forms that allow them to give creative expression to all that they are experiencing.

Regardless of our age or stage of life, this last year has reminded us what it is like to be negotiating a big unknown world without words to adequately name our feelings. So, if you are starting to realize you, or anyone you care about might benefit from some artistic expression, check out all that Barrio Alegria has to offer @ https://www.barrioalegria.com It’s all FREE!!!!
